Masseter botox, for a jaw that has squared off

Botulinum toxin into the masseter — the chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw. As the muscle relaxes it takes up less room, and the line of the jaw softens with it. Nothing is cut. Male patients only.

How it works

What the injection does

Botulinum toxin weakens the contraction of a muscle. Put into the expression muscles it smooths the lines those muscles create; put into the masseter — the chewing muscle you can feel harden at the angle of the jaw when you clench — it eases the bulk that makes the jaw look square.

The change is not immediate. The muscle relaxes over the following weeks, and the outline follows it. Nothing is cut, and a full-face appointment takes about an hour.

It is worth asking about if

  • The angle of your jaw has squared off and you would rather it did not.
  • You clench or grind, and the muscle there has built up.
  • You want the outline softened without anything being cut.
Before you decide

Who cannot have it

Even if none of these apply, the doctor may decide not to treat depending on your history, your current medication and how you are on the day. Tell the doctor about everything you take, including anything bought over the counter.

  • You have a neuromuscular disorder — myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, for example.
  • You are hypersensitive to botulinum toxin or to plasma-derived products.
  • You have glaucoma.
  • You take antiplatelet or anticoagulant medication.

What you need to know

Important information

  • The effect is not immediate: the muscle relaxes over the following weeks, and the outline follows. How much it changes varies between people.
  • Botulinum toxin wears off. How long it lasts and when to repeat it is something the doctor sets out at the consultation.
  • Tell the doctor about any neuromuscular condition, glaucoma, and any blood-thinning or nervous-system medication you take — these rule the injection out.
  • All treatments on this page are self-pay (自由診療). Japanese national health insurance does not apply, and the full amount is charged at the clinic.
  • Prices shown include consumption tax and are the prices at the time of writing. They can change without notice — the price confirmed at your consultation is the one that applies.
  • Any procedure carries some risk. A doctor checks your history and current medication beforehand, and will decline to treat where it is not safe to do so.

Coming as an English speaker

You can be seen here without speaking Japanese. Consultations are handled with a translation app and written notes rather than by an English-speaking doctor, which works well for treatments where the decision is straightforward — repeat prescriptions, testing, hair removal — and is slower where you have a complicated history to explain. Treatment information, pricing and access details on these pages are in English. The booking system and the pre-visit questionnaire are in Japanese, so message us on LINE beforehand if you would like help completing them.
