HIFU · Shimbashi & Ginza

HIFU for sagging around the jaw, cheeks and eyes

Focused ultrasound reaches the collagen layer deep in the skin and tightens it from the inside. Nothing is cut and no needle is used, so there is little in the way of visible downtime. Male patients only, which is the part most men ask about first.

How it works

What HIFU does, and the device we use

HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The ultrasound is focused on the collagen layer in the deeper skin, and the response to that prompts tightening from the inside. No needle is involved, and because nothing is cut the skin is not broken — so pain and infection risk are low and it does not interrupt ordinary life the way surgery does.

The device here is New Doublo, a medical HIFU unit from 2021. Doublo Gold carries the lifting effect of earlier HIFU while using technology intended to reduce discomfort during treatment, with the energy distribution adjusted so that the more sensitive areas can be worked on with less load on the skin.

It is used for the things men tend to notice from the mid-thirties onwards: slackness around the cheeks and jaw, sagging and lines under the eyes, and the nasolabial folds. It is aimed at improving those — how much changes varies from person to person. We also do laser lifting with a long-pulse Nd:YAG, which works at a different depth and on a shorter cycle. Which one suits you is decided at the consultation.

Important information

  • Reported side effects are a sensation of heat and pain during delivery, temporary redness and swelling, and rarely nerve-related symptoms such as numbness. Not everyone gets the same result, and the degree of effect varies between people.
  • For one week before and one week after, avoid skincare containing peeling agents, vitamin A (retinol) or hydroquinone. Rubbing the skin hard afterwards can inflame it.
  • For the first 12 hours after treatment, apply only something mild and light. From 12 hours onwards, moisturise properly and use sunscreen — the skin is more affected by UV than usual.
  • All treatments on this page are self-pay (自由診療). Japanese national health insurance does not apply, and the full amount is charged at the clinic.
  • Prices shown include consumption tax and are the prices at the time of writing. They can change without notice — the price confirmed at your consultation is the one that applies.
  • Any procedure carries some risk. A doctor checks your history and current medication beforehand, and will decline to treat where it is not safe to do so.

Coming as an English speaker

You can be seen here without speaking Japanese. Consultations are handled with a translation app and written notes rather than by an English-speaking doctor, which works well for treatments where the decision is straightforward — repeat prescriptions, testing, hair removal — and is slower where you have a complicated history to explain. Treatment information, pricing and access details on these pages are in English. The booking system and the pre-visit questionnaire are in Japanese, so message us on LINE beforehand if you would like help completing them.

From straight after the session, with more of it from around three weeks as collagen production picks up. It lasts six months to about a year on average, though that depends on the state of the skin and varies between people.

Does HIFU hurt?
