Hair loss treatment online, delivered anywhere in Japan

AGA and FAGA medication prescribed after a doctor’s review and posted to you. It is a treatment you take every month for years — which is exactly why it should not require a monthly trip to a clinic.

In the parcel

What arrives each month

The tablets come in a bottle, not a blister strip — a month is one bottle. Which one you are sent depends on what the doctor prescribes.

Hair Revival bottle of 30 capsules containing finasteride and oral minoxidilHair RevivalOne bottle is a month. The three-month pack is three of these in one parcel.¥13,800 per month
Hair Revival-D bottle of capsules containing dutasteride and oral minoxidilHair Revival-DThe same idea with dutasteride, which blocks DHT more broadly.¥15,800 per month

Finasteride and dutasteride on their own are dispensed as plain tablets. Ordering the three-month pack means one parcel and one ¥550 postage instead of three.

Names

Propecia, Avodart, Rogaine — what they are called here

If you were treated in another country you probably know these by brand name. Japanese clinics list the active ingredient, which is why the price list above may look unfamiliar.

What is dispensed here are generic preparations of those ingredients. The ingredient and the strength are the same; the maker and the appearance are not. If you were already on a brand abroad, tell the doctor which and at what dose — continuing is usually straightforward.

Expectations

The first weeks: more hair may come out, not less

This is the thing to read before you start, because it is the reason most people quit.

In the first weeks some people shed more than usual. It is called shedding, and it happens because follicles moving into a new growth phase push the old hair out ahead of the new. It looks exactly like the treatment making things worse. It is not, and it settles.

If it happens, say so at a follow-up rather than stopping on your own. Stopping in week three because of the thing that signals the medication is working is a genuinely common and avoidable outcome.

Timeline

What happens, month by month

Hair grows in cycles, so the medication works over months rather than weeks. As a general guide, the changes usually come in this order.

  1. Month 1 — early sheddingSome people see more hair coming out, not less. This is usually temporary: follicles moving into a new growth phase push the old hair out first, and it is not a sign that the treatment is failing. Talk to the doctor rather than stopping on your own.
  2. Month 2 — more bodyMany people notice their hair feels firmer, with more body.
  3. Month 3 — filling inMany people begin to see their hair fill in.
  4. Month 6 — a clearer differenceWith consistent daily use, many people see a clearer increase by now. It is also the usual point to judge whether the treatment suits you.
  5. Year 1 onwards — maintenanceTreatment shifts to keeping what you have gained. Hair loss is progressive, so stopping usually lets the loss return over the following months. The doctor adjusts the medication as you go.
Hair loss treatment timeline: early shedding around month 1, more body around month 2, hair filling in around month 3, a clearer difference around month 6, and maintenance from a year onwards
A general guide to the usual course of treatment, not a photograph of a patient. How much changes, and how quickly, differs from person to person.

Photographs taken at the start, in the same light and from the same angle, are more reliable than memory. Take them before the first tablet.

Want more growth at the hairline, or a stronger result?

Alongside the tablets, we recommend scalp injections — a blend of minoxidil and growth-factor preparations injected directly into the hairline or the areas you most want to thicken, once a month at ¥19,800 per session (incl. tax). They can be combined with the tablets you receive online.

Scalp injections are given at the clinic, so they need a visit to Shimbashi. See the in-clinic hair loss page. The injectable is not approved as a medicine in Japan — please read about the scalp injection.

Why online suits this

A monthly medication should not need a monthly trip

Hair loss treatment is not a one-off. It is a tablet taken every day for years, and the practical question is not whether it works but whether you will still be taking it in month fourteen.

  • The three-month pack removes two thirds of the admin. ¥18,000 for 90 tablets works out at ¥6,000 a month rather than ¥13,800, with one postage charge instead of three.
  • No appointment to reschedule when work runs late.
  • Delivered to any address in Japan, so moving city does not interrupt treatment.
  • No standing subscription. Nothing is charged unless you ask for the next order.
How it works

Five steps, no travel

  1. Message us on LINESay you would like to be seen in English and we will set up the questionnaire and a consultation time. Both the booking system and the questionnaire are in Japanese, which is why we do this part with you.
  2. Fill in the questionnaireSent before the appointment. Symptoms, medical history, and anything you already take — including blood pressure medication, which matters here.
  3. Speak with the doctorAbout 10 to 15 minutes. The doctor confirms what is suitable and explains the risks before anything is prescribed.
  4. Pay the invoiceSent over LINE after the consultation. Credit card or bank transfer.
  5. Medication is postedDispatched once payment clears, to your home or any address you nominate. Postage is ¥550 per delivery.
Taking it

How to take it

  • One tablet a day, at roughly the same time. With or without food. Consistency matters more than the hour.
  • Topical minoxidil is applied to a dry scalp, usually twice a day, and left to absorb.
  • Missing a day is not a crisis. Take the next one as normal; do not double up.
  • Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken finasteride or dutasteride tablets.
  • Tell the doctor if you take blood pressure medication — oral minoxidil was originally a blood pressure drug and the two interact.
Safety

Side effects, and the PSA point nobody mentions

  • Reduced libido and erectile difficulty are the effects most often reported with finasteride and dutasteride. They are uncommon, and usually resolve if the medication is stopped.
  • Liver function changes are rare but recognised.
  • Oral minoxidil can cause hair growing where you did not want it, and fluid retention or swelling. Palpitations, headache and dizziness are reported less often.
  • Topical minoxidil can cause scalp itching or irritation.

It lowers your PSA reading

Finasteride and dutasteride roughly halve PSA, the blood marker used to screen for prostate cancer. A reading that looks normal may not be.

If you are screened, tell the doctor doing the screening that you take this. It is a one-sentence thing to mention and it changes how the number is read. It is on this page because it is rarely said anywhere at the point where you actually start the medication.

Who this is not for

Finasteride and dutasteride are for men only. They must not be taken by women or by anyone under 20. For female pattern hair loss there is Hair Revival-FF, which is minoxidil-based with no finasteride — not prescribed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The preparation

Oral minoxidil, and what you should know about it

The Hair Revival tablets combine finasteride or dutasteride with oral minoxidil. Finasteride and dutasteride are approved medicines in Japan. Oral minoxidil is not, and Japanese regulation requires us to set out exactly what that means before you decide.

About this unapproved medicine

  • Oral minoxidil is not approved as a medicine in Japan. The tablet form used in Hair Revival, Hair Revival-D and Hair Revival-FF has no Japanese pharmaceutical approval.
  • How we obtain it. Through a domestic import agent in Japan, used in self-pay treatment.
  • Whether an approved equivalent exists. Minoxidil is approved in Japan as a topical solution only — the oral form is not. Finasteride and dutasteride are both approved.
  • Safety information from other countries. Oral minoxidil was approved by the US FDA in 1979 as the blood pressure medicine Loniten, at 10–40mg. Hair loss is not an approved indication; low doses of 0.25–5mg are used off-label in many countries, and a 2024 consensus paper in JAMA Dermatology supports low-dose oral minoxidil as one option. Reported adverse effects are hypertrichosis in around 15% of people and fluid retention in 1.3–10%, with palpitations, headache and dizziness less often.
  • Because it is unapproved, it is not covered by Japan’s public relief system for adverse drug reactions (医薬品副作用被害救済制度).
  • Treatment here is self-pay. Japanese national health insurance does not apply, and the prices are as listed above.

About the scalp injection (unapproved medicine)

  • The injectable is not approved as a medicine in Japan. The blend of minoxidil and growth-factor preparations used for scalp injections has no Japanese pharmaceutical approval.
  • How we obtain it: through an authorised distributor in Japan.
  • Whether an approved equivalent exists: minoxidil is approved in Japan as a topical solution, but no medicine is approved in Japan for injection into the scalp.
  • Safety information from other countries: we have not confirmed that this preparation is approved as a medicine in any other country. Serious risks may not yet be known.
  • Main side effects: pain, redness, swelling or bruising where it is injected. Rarely, minoxidil may cause palpitations, swelling or headache.
  • Japan's adverse drug reaction relief system does not cover it. Because the medicine is unapproved, that compensation scheme is unavailable even in the event of a serious adverse reaction.
  • Treatment is self-pay. Japanese national health insurance does not apply.

If you would rather not take an unapproved medicine, say so. Finasteride or dutasteride on its own, with topical minoxidil if you want it, uses only approved products and is ¥4,800 a month.

What you need

No insurance card, no residence card

Treatment here is self-pay, so national health insurance is not involved either way. That removes most of what usually makes a Japanese clinic hard to use if you are not a long-term resident.

  • No insurance card. There is nothing to claim against.
  • No residence card and no passport. Your name, a contact number and a delivery address are enough.
  • Any address in Japan — it does not have to be a registered one.
  • Credit card or bank transfer, invoiced over LINE after the consultation.
  • Nothing is reported to an employer or a family insurance plan.
In person

When coming in is the better option

Online works for a prescription. It does not work for everything, and the doctor will say so rather than prescribe around a problem.

  • Where an online consultation is not enough to prescribe safely you will be asked to attend.
  • If the pattern of loss does not look like ordinary male or female pattern hair loss — patches, scarring, sudden onset — it should be looked at rather than treated blind.
  • If you want to start the same day. At the clinic the medication is dispensed on the spot.

The clinic is one minute from Shimbashi Station, open until 21:00 on weekdays. Details are on the hair loss page for in-clinic visits.

Before you start

What you need to know

Important information

  • All treatment on this page is self-pay (自由診療). Japanese national health insurance does not apply.
  • Finasteride and dutasteride are for men only. They must not be taken by women or by anyone under 20, and women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets.
  • Oral minoxidil is not approved in Japan and is not covered by the public relief system for adverse drug reactions. The full disclosure is set out above.
  • Treatment lowers PSA readings. Tell anyone screening you for prostate cancer that you take this.
  • A doctor decides what is appropriate. Where an online consultation is not sufficient to prescribe safely, you will be asked to attend the clinic.
  • Medication is dispatched only after payment has cleared.
  • Any medicine can cause side effects, and none of these works for everyone. The doctor will decline to prescribe where it is not safe to do so.
  • Prices include consumption tax and were correct at the time of writing.

Coming as an English speaker

You can be treated here without speaking Japanese. There is no English-speaking doctor here — consultations are handled with a translation app and written notes, which works well where the decision is straightforward, as it usually is for a repeat prescription. The booking system and the questionnaire are in Japanese, so message us on LINE first and we will set both up with you.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does online hair loss treatment cost in total?

The consultation is free. Finasteride or dutasteride is ¥4,800 for a month, Hair Revival ¥13,800, and postage is ¥550 per delivery. A first month of finasteride delivered comes to ¥5,350 all in. There is no booking fee and no subscription.

Do I have to visit the clinic first?

No. Message us on LINE, fill in the questionnaire, speak to the doctor for 10 to 15 minutes, pay the invoice, and the medication is posted. If the doctor decides an online consultation is not enough to prescribe safely, you will be asked to come in.

Is it cheaper to order three months at once?

The three-month pack of Hair Revival is ¥18,000, which works out at ¥6,000 a month rather than ¥13,800. You also pay one ¥550 postage instead of three, and you are not arranging a consultation every month. It is the option most people move to once they know the medication suits them.

My hair started falling out more after I began. Should I stop?

Usually not. More hair coming out in the first weeks is common and is called shedding — follicles moving into a new growth phase push the old hair out first. It settles. It is the single most common reason people abandon treatment that was in fact working. Tell the doctor rather than stopping on your own.

How long before I see anything?

As a general guide: around month 1, shedding can briefly increase; around month 2, many people notice more body; around month 3, hair starts to fill in; and by around month 6, many see a clearer increase. From about a year, treatment moves into maintenance. Results vary between people, and six months is the usual point to judge whether it suits you. See what happens, month by month.

What happens if I stop?

The hair that the medication was holding on to is lost over the following months. These treatments maintain rather than cure, so the decision to start is a decision to continue. That is worth knowing before you begin rather than after.

Does this affect a prostate cancer test?

Yes, and it matters. Finasteride and dutasteride lower PSA readings. If you are screened for prostate cancer, tell the doctor doing the screening that you take this — otherwise a normal-looking result can be misread. Nobody tells you this at the point of sale, so it is on this page.

What are the side effects?

Reduced libido and erectile difficulty are the effects most often reported with finasteride and dutasteride. They are uncommon and usually resolve if the medication is stopped. Liver function changes are rare but recognised. Minoxidil solution can cause scalp itching. Oral minoxidil can cause hair growing where you did not want it, and fluid retention.

Can women take this?

Not finasteride or dutasteride — those are for men only, and women who are or may become pregnant should not even handle crushed or broken tablets. For female pattern hair loss there is Hair Revival-FF at ¥13,800 a month, which is minoxidil-based with no finasteride. It is not prescribed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Can I add scalp injections to online treatment?

Yes, but scalp injections are given at the clinic, so they need a visit to Shimbashi. They are a blend of minoxidil and growth-factor preparations injected into the hairline or the areas you want to thicken, once a month at ¥19,800 per session, and can be combined with the tablets. The injectable is not approved as a medicine in Japan; please read about the scalp injection.

Do I need an insurance card, a residence card or a passport?

No. Treatment here is self-pay, so Japanese national health insurance is not involved and no insurance card is needed. You are not asked for a residence card or a passport either — your name, a contact number and a delivery address are enough.

Do I need to speak Japanese?

No. There is no English-speaking doctor here — the consultation is handled with a translation app and written notes, which is usually enough for a prescription decision. Message us on LINE beforehand and we will set up the questionnaire and the booking with you, since both are in Japanese.

Can I keep taking it if I leave Japan?

We can write the active ingredient and the strength in English so a doctor abroad can continue it, and a longer supply can be prescribed before you go. We cannot advise on another country’s customs or import rules; please check those yourself.

Can I get this if I do not live in Tokyo?

Yes, that is the point of it. Medication is posted anywhere in Japan, so where the clinic is does not matter for anything treated with a prescription.

Last updated . Information on this page was accurate at the time of writing. All treatment here is self-pay; Japanese national health insurance does not apply. Oral minoxidil is not approved as a pharmaceutical in Japan. Prescribing follows a consultation with a doctor.
