Background

What actually works

Treating it early is the whole game

Androgenetic alopecia is progressive. The follicles that have already closed do not reopen, so treatment is far better at keeping hair than at bringing it back. That is an unglamorous thing for a clinic to say, but it is the reason not to wait another year.

How the medication divides up

  • Finasteride and dutasteride attack the cause: they suppress DHT, the androgen that shrinks follicles. This is what slows or stops the loss.
  • Minoxidil works on the other side, improving blood flow at the follicle to push growth.
  • Hair Revival is the clinic’s own combination formulation, with a stronger version (-D) and a version for women (-FF).

Women are treated differently, not less

Female pattern hair loss has a different mechanism and a different drug. Finasteride and dutasteride are not prescribed to women — women of childbearing age should not even handle broken tablets. Hair Revival-FF is the formulation used here.

What you need to know

Important information

  • Finasteride and dutasteride are for men only. They must not be taken by women or by anyone under 20, and women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets.
  • Reported side effects include reduced libido and erectile difficulty, and rarely liver function changes. Treatment lowers PSA readings, which matters if you are screened for prostate cancer — tell the doctor doing the screening that you take it.
  • All treatments on this page are self-pay (自由診療). Japanese national health insurance does not apply, and the full amount is charged at the clinic.
  • Prices shown include consumption tax and are the prices at the time of writing. They can change without notice — the price confirmed at your consultation is the one that applies.
  • Any medicine can cause side effects. A doctor reviews your history and current medication before prescribing, and will decline to prescribe where it is not safe to do so.

Coming as an English speaker

You can be seen here without speaking Japanese. Consultations are handled with a translation app and written notes rather than by an English-speaking doctor, which works well for treatments where the decision is straightforward — repeat prescriptions, testing, hair removal — and is slower where you have a complicated history to explain. Treatment information, pricing and access details on these pages are in English. The booking system and the pre-visit questionnaire are in Japanese, so message us on LINE beforehand if you would like help completing them.

FAQ

Common questions

How long before I see anything?

Hair grows slowly, and these drugs work by holding on to what you have before they add anything. Most people are advised to give it six months before judging, and treatment is ongoing rather than a one-off course — stopping usually means the loss resumes.

Finasteride or dutasteride?

Both block DHT, the hormone behind male pattern loss. Dutasteride blocks a wider range of it. They are the same price here (¥4,800 a month), so the choice is clinical rather than financial — the doctor decides with you.

Can women be treated?

Yes. Female pattern hair loss (FAGA) is treated with Hair Revival-FF at ¥13,800 a month. Finasteride and dutasteride are not prescribed to women.

Do I have to come to the clinic every month?

No. Online consultation is available and medication can be posted anywhere in Japan, which is what most people on long-term treatment do.
