If you started treatment in another country, you probably know your medication by its brand name. Japanese clinics generally prescribe by the active ingredient, which is why the names on this page may look unfamiliar. They are the same substances.

Bring the box or a photo of it. Strengths and formulations differ between countries, so the doctor will want to see what you have been taking before continuing it. Tell us at the consultation how long you have been on it and whether anything changed while you were.
Androgenetic alopecia is progressive. The follicles that have already closed do not reopen, so treatment is far better at keeping hair than at bringing it back. That is an unglamorous thing for a clinic to say, but it is the reason not to wait another year.
Finasteride slows the loss; minoxidil works on growth. Most people end up wanting both, which normally means two prescriptions. Hair Revival puts finasteride 1mg and oral minoxidil 5mg together in a single daily tablet, which is simpler to keep up — and keeping it up is the whole point, since these treatments only work while you take them.
On the three-month pack it comes to ¥6,000 a month, close to finasteride on its own at ¥4,800. Female pattern hair loss has a different mechanism and a different drug. Finasteride and dutasteride are not prescribed to women — women of childbearing age should not even handle broken tablets. Hair Revival-FF is minoxidil-based and contains no finasteride, which is why it can be prescribed to women. It must not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, or by anyone who may be pregnant, and it is not prescribed under the age of 20. As with the men's formulation, the oral minoxidil in it is not approved in Japan.
Hair grows slowly, and the drugs work by holding on to what you have before they add anything. Judging too early is the most common reason people give up on treatment that was working.
Some people see more hair coming out in the first weeks, not less. This is usually temporary — follicles moving into a new growth phase push the old hair out first — and it is not a sign that the treatment is failing. It settles. Tell the doctor if it worries you rather than stopping on your own.

Finasteride and dutasteride are for men only. They must not be taken by women or by anyone under 20, and women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets. Women are treated with Hair Revival-FF instead, which must not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Tell the doctor everything you already take. Where it is not safe to prescribe, we will say so rather than prescribe anyway.
All treatment here is self-pay (自由診療), which means Japanese national health insurance is not used. For someone who is not on the national system — a short stay, a new arrival, a dependant, anyone between jobs — that turns out to be an advantage rather than an obstacle.
